‘Captain America’ Closes Some D.C. Streets

“Chris Evans, star of the upcoming “Captain America” sequel, made an appearance on the National Mall Tuesday, shooting scenes for the upcoming movie with co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie.

The production underway in D.C. Tuesday is officially known only as “Freezer Burn.” But that working title is associated with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the sequel to the 2011 blockbuster that starred Evans, took in an estimated $140 million and was a key part of the series that led to “Avengers” in 2012.

Evans was seen in sweatpants and a grey T-shirt, laughing with makeup staff and briefly doing push-ups and jumping jacks.”

I just saw the Iron Man 3. Sadly it wasn’t awesome. The movie had a generic but overall OK plot. But only just OK. All the turns were easy to see miles away and the difference to let’s say the Avengers base plot line is very, VERY small. It had some nifty effects and a good overall look. The action sequences were fabulous, as always. Where it failed is Robert Downey Junior. I’ve now seen him do genius smug bastard in six different movies and am getting really tired of it. He lacked the ability to convey the real sincere emotion devout of mockery and well, smugness, that would have been required for parts of the movie. I have no idea why that is as I’ve always (ever since the days of Chaplin and such) thought of him as a very talented actor. Lately it is just the RDJ show in every movie he does. A smirk there, a joke here, that is all. And it left the movie hollow. However much the rest of the cast shined next to him, including Guy Pierce as Aldrich Killian who is simply fabulous. And so are Don Cheadle and Ben Kingsley. I even kinda liked Gwyneth Paltrow as an action star. For crying out loud even the compulsory kid was good. But what can you do when the primus motor is missing. Add more Iron Man suits? Check. Blow shit up? Check. Have burning extremis dudes? Check. Due to all of that this is not a complete miss but this one really isn’t a hit either.

Thor’s drawing of Yggdrasil the world tree and the nine realms, Sif’s shield, Jane Foster’s ID badges, the Casket of Ancient Winters (three views), and the page about Thor and the cover from the book “Myths and Legends from Around the World,” all from “Thor.”

I just saw Dredd which was quite fantastic. It had a few problems in the slower scenes, but as there were like all together two non superactionpacked scenes, I’m quite fine with that. It still managed to hold the plot together while it went forward like a particularly nasty and pissed off freight train. It’s a brutal, violent and grim film that does justice to the comics.

And the Slo-Mo effects are literally to die for. Beautiful and very innovative stuff. Check out this featurette to see what I’m talking about.

“The Goon” Movie… let’s KICKSTART this sucker!!!
The official Iron Man 3 poster.

The official Iron Man 3 poster.

I’ve never really liked Spider-Man. Not the comics nor the movies. So I took my time to see the new movie. I knew I would watch it at some point as I watch pretty much every comic-/superhero-movie out there. Today I just happened to stumble into it and thought I’d just watch it on the background while working. After 5 or so minutes I had stopped working and stared at the screen intently. I can honestly say this movie is the first time I have throughout enjoyed Spider-Man. The dialogue was crisp and smart and the acting was really inspired. And then they showed the Lizard for the first time… There is no excuse in the world for a big budget flick like this to have such shotty CGI at this day and age. None. And quite soon after that they also lost the plot and just threw a fight scene after fight scene on the screen. And don’t get me wrong, I do like a good fight scene but if a rubbery 3D figure is just bouncing against another I’ll rather be holding the controller myself while trying to get through level 257 000 or something. In the end I still liked the movie. I just wish that in the mandatory sequel they will actually add action sequences when needed and not just every 15 minutes to keep the tempo up. And I have to confess my love for Gwen Stacy in this. It is refreshing to see a superhero’s girlfriend/female sidekick/best friend who’s not a damsel in distress or a super bad ass tough chick. She’s a regular girl who can still take care of herself, as one does. And she has a brain. Lovely, just lovely.
